Although few people would call the Me-109 a beautiful airplane, it does have an unmistakable sinister character, a quality that always makes for an interesting and effective model. The angular, purposeful lines leave no doubt that this is a weapon. Past attempts at the 109 in smaller sizes gave disappointing results, due to high wing-loading and poor landing-gear configuration. The 1/5-scale (79" span) model has eliminated these difficulties by virtue of its larger size. Wing-loading is light, giving quick response, full aerobatic capability, and solid low-speed stability. The large wheels, oleo legs and wider track have given good ground-handling, even on grass. Big high-output engines are not necessary; an ordinary O.S. Max.90 turning a 13 x 7 provides ample power for high performance. However, the larger engines do fit easily behind the big 5-1/2" spinner, and will not stick out offensively. Since the Me-109 is one of the best-documented aircraft of "the big war," information is plentiful, with a wide range of interesting colour-schemes, weapons packs, drop-tanks etc. available.
This factor commends it as an excellent choice for Sport Scale contests. Moreover, even with lots of extra details, it is easy to bring the ship in under the 15 lbs. weight limit in this class, giving the builder a definite edge over the smaller .60 powered entries.
With its easily-handled medium size and attractive price, the Dave Platt Me-109 provides an ideal first step up into 1/5-scale levels of appearance and performance.
